Online Safety and Cyber Bullying

ICT is an everyday part of people’s lives and we as an alternative provision are increasing our use of new technology. At Regency Source, we have systems in place to protect your children. We urge all families to enable security settings on home devices to help protect children online.

Key Rules

ng people should only add, on social media sites, people they know and tryst in real life.

Some predatory paedophiles can convincingly pose as another teenager and may spend months or years ‘grooming’ the victim until they meet face to face.

Don’t ban children from these sites; they will most likely use them at a friend’s house or on their phone, personal media device or games consoles.

Take an interest and suggest they add you as a friend so you can keep an eye on them when they first join.

Have the main computer in a communal area of the home where there is passive supervision and be reasonable about time online. Talk if you feel it is getting out of hand - however how many hours did you spend watching TV when you were their age? The internet is at least active, not passive and they can learn a lot from it.

If they have a wireless laptop and you want them to stop going online after a set number of hours, unplug the router.

CEOP

The CEOP report button is the online equivalent to 999. Children and Young People need to recognise how and when to use, just like when dialing 999. Look out for websites that have it built in. You can also visit: CEOP

We would highly recommend adding: www.thinkuknow.co.uk and looking at their suggested materials for all the family.

Online Bullying

Cyber bullying is the use of the internet and related technologies (including social media) to harm other people in a deliberate, repeated and hostile manner. Children can be unkind to each other online. Bullying is not a new concept, but the technology has changed making it easier to track and prove who is responsible. If you suspect your child is having a problem, the evidence will be on the computer or mobile device. If you can print or screen shot messages or web postings we can and will investigate and support.
